Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

  • Miniature pottery is small-scale ceramic artwork that is handcrafted using the same techniques as full-sized pottery. At Petit Pottery, each miniature piece is individually crafted, glazed and fired to create tiny vases, planters, plates, bowls and decorative objects.

  • All pots, vases, planters and fibre works are handmade by me.

  • Miniature pottery is created using many of the same techniques as traditional ceramics, but on a much smaller scale. Each piece begins as a small amount of clay that is carefully shaped by hand or by a miniature wheel. Once dry, it is fired in a kiln, glazed and fired again to achieve its finished appearance. Working in miniature requires patience, precision and attention to detail, as even the smallest imperfections are more noticeable at a tiny scale.

  • Miniature ceramics can be created in many different scales depending on their intended use. Some pieces are designed to complement dollhouses and miniature displays, while others are created as standalone collectible artworks. Because every piece at Petit Pottery is handmade, dimensions may vary slightly. Individual product listings include measurements to help collectors determine whether a piece will suit their dollhouse, diorama or miniature collection.

  • Miniature pottery appeals to a wide range of collectors across Australia and around the world. Some collectors enjoy creating miniature displays, dollhouses or dioramas, while others appreciate the craftsmanship involved in producing detailed ceramic work at such a small scale. Handmade miniature pottery also makes a unique gift and can be displayed as a small artwork, conversation piece or treasured keepsake.

  • I grow all of our mini cacti at home where I dote over them on a daily basis. I’m not a large scale business so the number and variety can be limited based on my ability to support the space ☺

  • Miniature crochet doilies are handcrafted using fine crochet cotton and a small crochet hook to create delicate lace patterns at a tiny scale. Each doily is made stitch by stitch using traditional crochet techniques, requiring patience, precision and careful attention to detail. These miniature fibre artworks are often used in dollhouses, dioramas, miniature room settings and decorative collections, where they add texture and realism to a display.

  • Petit Pottery creations are collected by miniature enthusiasts, dollhouse collectors, diorama builders, fibre art lovers, pottery collectors and people who simply enjoy beautifully crafted tiny objects. Each piece is individually handmade in Melbourne, Australia and designed to celebrate the artistry of miniature craftsmanship.

  • For pots, vases, planters and fibre works - I’m going to start out by sending within Australia but watch this space. Once I get the packaging and sending perfected for longer hauls, I’ll make them available anywhere.

For the cacti - I can only send plants within Australia and due to biosecurity laws, I am unable to send to Western Australia or Tasmania.

  • What are you waiting for!? Get that package open and get your mini cactus in its soil. 😅

  • I’m so sorry to hear that!

    Australian order:

Please start by checking the tracking that comes with the order to see what the package status is. Delivery in Australia has been consistently slow ever since COVID but cacti are very resilient so don’t stress.

If your tracking says that the package has arrived and you haven’t actually received it, contact your local post office asap. Aus Post has a great app that you can use to report undelivered packages, so let them know as soon as you do.

Plant care

  • When you assemble our package by putting the soil and your cactus in its planter, make sure to give it a good water and let the water drain from the hole.

If your planter doesn’t have a drainage hole, sprinkle a couple of drops of water over the soil (it won’t take much).

If you’re keeping it indoors, make sure to place your cactus in a location within the house where it can receive bright indirect sunlight (eg a windowsill)

On an ongoing basis - the watering instructions change depending on the season, be careful to not overwater your cacti.

Winter - you only need to water every couple of weeks.

Summer - give it a water weekly.

  • Each planter comes with a link to simple and easy step by step instructions on how to assemble your cactus and planter.

Go to our resources here, for a copy of the instructions and video that you can follow.

Planters with a drainage hole will only need soil. Planters without a drainage hole will need a small layer of activated charcoal at the bottom.

  • The point of the small planter is to keep the size of the cactus small. If you repot to a larger pot, it will grow larger to fill the space.

We suggest you refresh the soil every year. You may also need to trim back the roots of your cactus as it continues to grow.

When you pull the cactus out, trim the roots back with clean scissors and refill the pot with fresh soil.

  • We hand mix the soil using a cactus specific base to make sure it is best suited for your plant.

  • Well we hope so!

Cacti are extremely resilient and can handle drought at times. We suggest you stick to a watering plan (less frequent in winter, more frequent in summer) and check on your cactus often to make sure it isn’t suffering from lack of water or sun.

Flower care

  • Each small vase comes with handpicked preserved/dried flowers.

  • These flowers have gone through preservation and drying processes to maintain their beauty. They are delicate but resilient, depending on your environment and level of care taken.

  • • Please do not water the flowers as water and humidity will cause damage.

    • Avoid direct sunlight or strong light to prevent colour fade.

•. Avoid wind and air from air-conditioners and heaters to prevent dryness.

•. Minimise touching the flowers as best you can.
